Narrubuwan means "place of many bees nests" in Wiradjuri, the language of the Country we meet, work and keep bees on. We chose the name because it says plainly what we are here to build: a place where bees, and the people who care for them, can thrive together.
We are a community group for beekeepers in the Kandos-Rylstone area, open to complete beginners through to experienced apiarists. Whether you keep honeybees, are curious about native bees and other pollinators, or simply want your garden buzzing with life, there is a place for you here. We are bee-agnostic by design, valuing the whole picture of healthy pollinators over lines drawn between different kinds of keepers.
At the heart of the group is education. We run workshops, field days and informal mentoring so new beekeepers can start with confidence and experienced ones can keep learning, whether that is hive management, biosecurity, pest and disease control, or the practical skills of harvesting and marketing honey. Knowledge shared freely makes every hive in the district stronger, and a strong district makes for healthier bees and better seasons for everyone.
We meet on Wiradjuri Country, and we hold that with respect, valuing the Indigenous knowledge that has cared for this land and its living systems for tens of thousands of years.
Climate, sustainability and community connection sit alongside education as reasons this group exists. Bees are a quiet indicator of how a landscape is faring, and beekeepers are often first to notice when flowering patterns shift or a season runs unusually dry or wet. By connecting local beekeepers we build a stronger picture of what is happening across Kandos-Rylstone, and a stronger network to respond together, whether that is a biosecurity concern, a swarm needing a home, or someone wanting advice on their first hive.
We are proud to partner with the Australian Beekeepers Association Kandos-Rylstone branch, and we are actively growing our committee. If you would like to help with mentoring, communications and social media, or organising events, we would love to hear from you.
Above all, this is a community group. We want it to be a welcoming, generous space where beginners feel comfortable asking questions, where experienced keepers enjoy passing on what they know, and where the whole district benefits from more people paying attention to the bees around them. Come along, get involved, and help us build a true place of many bees nests.
