Peter MacLeod Senior was born in Aird Uig, Lewis, in December 1878. He came to Glasgow around 1900 and likely joined the 3rd Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers around this time too. The 3rd L.R.V. won the World Pipe Band Championships in 1907, and Peter Senior would have been a member of this band. In 1908, the 3rd L.R.V. became the 7th Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). When the First World War broke out, Peter Senior became the Pipe Major of the 7th (Reserve) Battalion of the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). He led the battalion's pipe band and was responsible for training pipers for service at the front. He was employed as a shipwright at Connells Shipbuilders until approximately 1927. He was involved in an accident at work, which led to his right leg being amputated. Peter Senior was a prolific composer; some of his classic tunes include: "John Morrison, Assynt House", "Major Manson", "Hugh Kennedy", and "Pipe Major Sam Scott".
Â
Peter MacLeod Junior was born in 1916; he too, was a noted composer and a fantastic performer. One of his earliest compositions was 'Bollochyle', a 6/8 March which placed 2nd at the Cowal Gathering composition competition. From 1938 to 1955, he lived in Bulawayo, Rhodesia. During the Second World War, he served as part of the 6th South African Armoured Division in North Africa and Italy. Some of his other well-known tunes include "The Blue Lagoon", "Dora MacLeod" and "Inspector Donald Campbell (Ness)".
