The 8-week Biology program will dive into the living world and explore topics such as ecosystems, cells, photosynthesis, plant anatomy and even worm wee! The sessions will be very hands on, with experiments every week involving microscopes, dissections and much more. There will also be a field trip to Robert Neumann Park in Currumbin Valley in Week 7 so students can conduct a waterbug survey.Â
Ages
Recommended for children 12-14 years old (some exceptions can be made for certain situations i.e. siblings wanting to be together). Maximum of 10 children per group.
Duration
This is an 8-week program with a 2-hour session held every Thursday 9.30 – 11.30am, beginning Thursday 30th January, 2025.
Cost
$39/week for a total cost of $312 for the 8 weeks (plus booking fee). The price includes all materials and the program will be run by a qualified Science Teacher. Bookings are non-refundable but may be transferred to another child.
Location
Weeks 1-6 and 8 will be held at a private residence in Currumbin Waters (exact address provided upon registration). Week 7 will be held at Robert Neumann Park in Currumbin Valley
Each session will have time dedicated for refreshments with full kitchen and bathroom facilities available (no kitchen facilities in Week 7).
Curriculum Content
The course will follow some elements of the Years 7-10 Australian Curriculum Science Syllabus, however it is not intended to align perfectly.
Whilst the program focusses heavily on Science-by-doing (experiments), workbooks will be provided to help dive deeper in to the Science behind the activities we do. These are not marked or assessed in any way so it is up to you and your child how they engage with them.
Safety Information
Please discuss any medical conditions and special needs prior to booking to ensure the program will be a positive experience for your child.
Some experiments will use dangerous equipment such as scalpels, scissors, Bunsen burners and household chemicals (vinegar, citric acid etc). Please consider if your child will be able to participate safely in these activities.
Caldera Science Club has full public liability insurance and adheres to strict child safety protocols. As such, parents/carers and non-registered children are unable to stay for the session - please reach out if you have special considerations before booking.
About
Caldera Science Club was created by Casey, a Science teacher of 8 years specialising in Biology, Chemistry, Marine Studies and Earth Science... with a little bit of permaculture on the side. He loves seeing a passion for Science ignited in children and believes that the best way to achieve this is through engaging, hands on activities that allow them to connect deeply with the natural world through a better understanding of it. Whilst he has worked primarily in a public school setting, Casey has always felt more aligned with alternate education models such as Steiner, Montessori and home/unschooling and is excited to homeschool his own children in the future.
