Fountain of Love and Life is honoured to present the stage film version of the original large-scale "Matteo Ricci The Musical" from Hong Kong. This special presentation offers Canadian audiences the opportunity to experience on the big screen a production inspired by the missionary work of Matteo Ricci, an Italian Jesuit priest, in China.
Since its premiere in Hong Kong in 2019, the musical sold out rapidly and went on to have three runs over four years, all to full houses and widespread critical acclaim. The production has been captured from multiple angles and carefully edited, transforming the live theatrical performance into a visually rich stage film.
Now presented overseas for the first time by Fountain of Love and Life, this screening invites audiences in Canada to relive every moving and powerful moment of the performance on screen.
Following the screening, a sharing session will be held, featuring special guest speakers, who will guide the audience to continue the experience through the film and its story, offering inspiration and deeper reflection on the interplay of faith, struggles, and culture.

Synopsis
It was never for fame that he embarked on this expedition. Journeying through the bleak times of alienation and being questioned, he looked back to find his dream had long been planted: the belief in blending Chinese and Western cultures had been growing in the Eastern nation.
Matteo Ricci------ and legend is his name------was listed by Life Magazine in The 100 People Who Made the Millennium (1000-1999).
The young Matteo Ricci, voyaged across oceans to China, for his missionary work. And what greeted him was hostility hosted by misunderstandings and two choices: stick to the then western Christian theology and bring it unchanged to China, which might lead to scolding, beating, or deportation; or forsake his belief and abide by Chinese customs, which might end up in abandonment of the Christian theology. Yet, he came to uncover the third approach: a direction no one attempted. He learned Chinese and with an open mind studied Chinese culture. He socialized with Chinese scholar officials as well as civilians. Then taking advantage of his extensive knowledge from literature, science, manners to philosophy and religion theories, with great efforts and time spent, he established the Matteo Ricci’s Method to combine the Chinese and Western cultures.
The musical Matteo Ricci tells a story about how the then Matteo Ricci, in the crisis of conflicting Chinese and Western customs, enveloped by hostility, struggled through the lengthened dark times alone in this Eastern nation.
